It's true. I DO normally edit this when I'm in a bad mood. But I'm here, I'm at home and I'm just thinking about this.

So, at the moment I'm working very hard. I'm working the shittiest shift - ok, there could be a worse shift, and I'm glad I'm not on it. Basically instead of working straight through and going home, I work a "split shift," which means I work, then I have some time off, then I work again. I have begged and begged to be switched to a "normal" shift. But my boss has kept me on this shift, for various reasons. Anyway, I really can;'t go home in the break so I'm sort of stuck there, and I may be doing work, but I'm not getting paid for it. Not getting paid, but occasionally getting sniped at for "not doing work" during my break.

So there's some new policy that says I can't take my students out without leaving a note. Fair enough. I write out my note, leave a note and a reason, and am told that taking my students out on a Friday is now suddenly "skiving." Now, I have to wait to see if it will be approved. I can't just make up my mind any longer.

I also can't have a dictionary (even though I teach English) unless someone in the "big house" is in. I can't have any pens for the board unless someone in the office is there. This is just another in a series of humiliations that I'm tired of having to endure. Certainly for this little amount of money.

And this is what I can't take any more. I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore.

Hello! I'm sad, a bit I guess, but truth be told I do really love teaching EFL, and I enjoy it more than I do copyediting. Though the truth is copyediting is easier and it pays better.

That said, I'm both excited and nervous about going back to full-time teaching Tuesday. I hope it goes well!

Anyway the newswire gang (all three of us) are going out to the eagle bar and diner for a goodbye lunch. This venue was chosen based on its collection of cocktails. Yes if you have to leave, do it in style!

On my way to work, spending as I shouldn't have (again), I finally succumbed to Elton John's greatest hits for the super bargain price of £8.99, and I've been enjoying it all morning long. Say what you want, little whippersnappers, and I'll give you that around the early to mid-80s Elton John started to suck intensely (Which do you think is the career low point? 'Circle of Life' or 'Can You Feel the Love Tonight?' or 'Candle in the Wind' remixed?), but you cannot touch his 70s stuff.

The man had a good songwriting partner and has a catalogue of great songs. I don't know how you can say that "Bennie and the Jets" doesn't sound just as fantastic today as it did then. "Don't Go Breakin' My Heart" was a hit I think when I was about three years old, and I remember it as one of the first songs I really, really loved. I could never remember the name so I would call it "The WooHoo" song.

"WooHoo..." it's not my favorite anymore, but it still can't be knocked a mon avis.

Object at will, people.

Oh, good lord...

On the horizon of the historic California Governor recall election, Taco Bell Corp. is making matters deliciously predictable. The Company today launched the Taco Poll, asking Californians of all ages to "put their vote where their mouth is" for their favorite gubernatorial candidate, simply by purchasing selected Taco Bell(R) menu items. A crunchy beef taco will count as one vote for Arnold Schwarzenegger, a soft chicken taco will count as a vote for not recalling Gov. Gray Davis, and any Grilled Stuft Burrito will show support for any of the other 134 candidates. Taco Poll results will be tallied from more than 1,000 participating California Taco Bell(R) restaurants and released weekly on every Tuesday until the official election.

Much as I love Taco Bell and dearly, dearly miss the Meximelt and the Mexican Pizza, and wish to god they had an outlet in London, I am (needless to say) horrified. I swear to you, this is true. Lots of Piratey goodness, Geoffrey Rush actually saying "AAR!" as grant pointed out <a href "http://themeparks.about.com/library/gallery/blpotc1.htm">in this thread, and that was very cool!

And oh, to be stuck on an island drinking rum with Johnny Depp, as jeweled and made up Johnny plays with my hair and "makes the moves on me...." mmmmm, a girl can dream. Orlando Bloom is OK but nowhere near as sexy as Johnny! Besides, what kind of pirate is Bloom, anyway?
{SPOILER AHEAD, SORT OF} At the end of the film, he should have left the girl because although she's a fine girl, "his life, his lover his lady is the sea...."

Also some of the scenes in the movie are STRAIGHT OUT of the Pirates of the Caribbean RIDE, and if anyone's been on it they know how fun the ride is and that was a nice touch. Only problem is now of course the ride will have hugely long lines when before you could hop right on.

Yo ho, yo ho a pirate's life for me!

So I had a very nice weekend for the most part and my only regret is that I did not go to Ms Flowers' shindig on Sunday.

This is due to "personal reasons," and then partly because after that was worked out and resolved in I think a good way, I just wasn't in the mood to be my normal social-ly self, which, if I wasn't also quite exhausted and hungover from Mr. Illmatic's birthday party I think I could have risen above that. Though I have heard how much fun it (Flowersparty) was, that the Lady of the Hour had a lovely glitter hat on which I would've liked to have seen.

Other than this dark spot, very nice indeed. I went to a fancy-pants dinner party on Friday.... well, not so fancypants when we were headbanging and singing "Bohemian Rhapsody" at the top of our lungs. I'm not ashamed! (Though perhaps I should be!) I kept losing my wine though... Illmatic's party was crazy and fun, and was there a love match between a certain charming member of the Barbelith Young Team Americain and my flatmate??? Hmmmm - he seems quite smitten I can tell you! You see what you get when you invite yourself along to parties at the last minute? I recommend such behavior to all y'all!

Ugh. New York New York New York. Even though the big North American blackout hit Toronto, Ottawa, Cleveland, Detroit, and quite a few other places, of COURSE the only story is "What were New Yorkers doing and thinking and feeling when the blackout hit? Will the subway be running soon? Blah blah blah.."

It's really my pet peeve when the press looks at New York as the center of the American Universe, so to speak. I mean, in many ways yes it is the most important city in the United States but I really don't think as a city it's actually indicative of America as a whole. If anything, it's more of an anomaly; a cultural bubble if you will.

That said, I will make it clear that I'm obviously at least slightly bitter because I am from the REAL greatest city in the world, Chicago, and no one ever appreciates us enough. Also, now that I live in London, I pretty much do exactly what I am complaining about with New York - which is I kind of forget there's a whole other country out there besides The Big City.

So yes, I'm aware of my double standard. But the New York centric ness still bothers me!

Four years ago today, my grandmother died. I'd like to say a few words about her, because I was pretty close to her and she was very cool. Even though she's been gone four years, I still miss her.

My grandma was always "old," but she never seemed old to me. When I was little I used to absolutely love staying at her house. To this day I still remember the smell of I think something like musty carpet and roast beef that always makes me think of grandma and grandpa's house. They lived out in "the country" and it was always fun running around in cornfields or playing with the toys and the books that grandma never failed to provide. She made the best peanut butter on butter toast sandwiches ever. I used to love the smell of coffee when I stayed at grandma and grandpa's house, and grandma let me try some once, even though I was only four years old!!!

When I graduated from 8th grade as a present, they took me to a place that had always fascinated me and also seemed kind of creepy: The House on the Rock, which I initially became fascinated with after grandma brought over a book about it.

Grandma was a nurse in "the olden days" and one of her specialities was telling you something really gross and disgusting about the body and its functions while you were at the dinner table. As soon as I would say something, she would innocently say something like, "What?" very innocently. I still think she secretly enjoyed grossing people out with here stories, though.

All of my cousins and I were terrified to be around grandma if you had a loose tooth, because she would always say something like, "I just wanna wiggle it a bit," and then she'd yank it right out. I got tricked once - never again!

When I was in junior high she and I spent many lovely afternoons watching Degrassi Junior High together.

OK, two final memories I want to share about my grandma.

One is her coffee. Bleech her coffee was just so bad and weak! Of course she would complain that I made it too strong but no. Anyway, when she and my grandpa would stay over, I used to try and RUN to the kitchen when I heard her steps so I could beat her to the french press. But dammit she was always just too fast for me! We both knew about our little game, too...

Finally one of my favorite memories is when Grandma and I quickly stopped into Ulta 3, which is sort of a discount cosmetics store in the States, and we were just supposed to be in their for about 5 minutes while my Grandpa waited in the car. An hour later a crabby Grandpa came into the store to get us, because we'd been busy spraying each other with perfume and shouting, "Oooh, look at this! Look at this!" at all of the make up around the story. You'd hardly be able to tell who was the 23 year old and who was the 77 year old!

*sigh*

I miss you grandma!

Dude, what's going on??? I still feel stressed out at work. The gossipy bitchy thing has died down somewhat, but one of my closest friends there still feels quite distant. I talked to her about it last week, and I think I'm going to mention it again today. Then I'm gonna leave it. I think part of it is the heat. It's just not fun to work in my school at the moment. It's so busy. And I knew the aftermath of all the gossipy bitching going on would leave a bad taste in everyone's mouth. And sure enough it has.

Also something has happened to my latest paycheck and I was supposed to receive it by last Friday at the latest but I still haven't received it so I'm hovering dangerously close to over my overdraft. The upside is that when I finally receive it, I'll have three consecutive weeks in which I receive a paycheck, the downside is I have no money at the moment. As we all know, that's stressful.

Anyway, bank holiday soon, and vacation soon, yay!

Where have I been, you're wondering?

Well, a few answers. One, naturally attempting to hide from the opressive heat. I think it feels a lot better today. However, I'm probably saying that because I'm working in an air conditioned building at the moment.

Two, having finished the first Harry Potter book, and having had to watch "The Chamber of Secrets" with my students at school last week, I have horribly, utterly succumbed to the Harry Potter phenomenon and have had my nose stuck in a Harry Potter book during my every free moment this week. I'm now midway through book "The Prisoner of Azkaban" and naturally need to get the next two books also. Maybe I'll save the latest one for my plane ride to Chicago, and maybe I'll take after this one and read the book I'm supposed to be reading for my book club. What is it with me ignoring the books I'm supposed to be reading? Je ne sais pas.

Three, when I've not been working or reading Harry Potter books I've obsessively been playing on friendster. It's not so much having lots of friends that interests me (though that interests me, don't get me wrong!), but having lots of FAKE friends that interests me! I love all of the fake identities on there. Makes it all like a bizarre trading card game.

So that's what I've been up to.

In honor of the alleged possibly hottest day in London ever , I thought I'd regale those of you sweating it out in non-air conditioned or poorly air conditioned offices with a few of my recently discovered ways to enjoy the heat wave.

1): say as often as possible: "It's not the heat, it's the stupidity."

2): Sing "heat"-related songs around the office. I reccomend Nelly's "Hot in Here." Really all you have to do is kind of wail "I AM/ so hot in HEEAAYAH!" You probably won't gain adoration, but you might find a way to distract yourself from the fact that you work in a hotbox from hell.

Finally, a word. I don't understand why people and offices in England doesn't just bite the bullet and buy a fan and an air-conditioning unit, for Pete's sake. OK, I KNOW it doesn't get hot often but it DOES happen, and with global warming it's only gonna get worse. So why NOT invest in a cooling system? You'll sleep better, your employees will work better, etc. etc.

Also, nobody seems prepared for heatwaves here. There are no cooling centers for the elderly, and don't tell me there aren't 90-year-old grandmas sweating it out in places that are dangerous for them, there's no one telling you to drink a lot of water and (my personal favorite in Chicago when it gets this hot): "If you don't have to go outside, DON'T!"

Maybe Americans just do it differently. Or maybe England really does just normally not get that hot, and so nobody knows what to do.

I dunno.

So, you ask, what is oldcore? It is truly not the enemy of joycore, and I don't really think it's borecore. I don't really hate the kids, for one day they too might be oldcore.

Oldcore was rather born out of my increasingly boredom and irritation with young Ms. Hinewater and her "LOOK AT ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's not quite as humid as Chicago, but the temp is supposed to hit the upper 90s today and tomorrow, and Britain just really isn't equipped to deal with hot weather. No air-conditioning, no fans for less than I think about £20. Which I guess makes sense considering it rarely gets above 72 degrees here, but it makes this weather quite unpleasant.

I wonder too if it's all an excuse for tube bosses and their ilk to shut and slow down their systems - just like last winter during the "inclement weather" of a few snowflakes shut down nearly all of London's transport system...

Of course, it is an old system, and I am actually talking about the weather in my blog as if anyone cares.

*yawn*

Someday soon, there's going to be a weekend where I have absolutely NOTHING to do and I can just lie on my bed, cuddling my sweetie occasionally and reading Saturday's Guardian and the Observer cover to cover. But not any weekend I can foresee soon.

That said, woohoo! Another whirlwind of a time, weeee! Up to Manchester, saw my aunt and two of my cousins. Saw the Jodrell Bank radio telescope. Not my first choice for fun but it was still nifty. Had the most gorgeous hotel room EVER in Manchester, which totally made up for the room that was "too small to swing a cat in" (note: direct quote from the Brighton B&B operator, not me, I don't know why you'd want to go around swinging cats). But over all too brief, and never ever any time for sleeping in.

Also super news in that due to BA's embarrassing strike action they've SLASHED their fares for four days and yours truly is most certainly going to nab a £216 (plus tax) roundtrip to Chicago.

Sweet home, here I come!

To those of you who said "it's garish" and "you need links," behold. One thing I will miss when I go back to full-time teaching is the ability to be late, which is absolutely not allowed in teaching. I mean, the class can't do anything if you're not there. I was an hour late this morning, and it was an hour well needed because I was up quite late with Camel and Amity and that wasn't the smartest thing to do, but it was nice in a girly fun and fun with smart girls sort of way.

Anyway the bestest bestest thing of all last night was the lovely nina, who actually GAVE me her Jenny Everywhere badge!!! How supercool is that??!?? Truly, I feel honoured, it was a special pin that she'd made with her pin-making machine! I think I want a pin-making machine, too. I really fail to understand why, two people who love each other and are in a mutually respecting, loving union are NOT analagious to 'God's plan.' I really don't understand how today's church's can be so fucking backwards on this issue. Is it really so important that "A Man and A Woman are conjoined in marriage" that the Catholic Church finds it preferable to have a violent, unhappy heterosexual couple as children's role models than a happy, loving gay couple. Arrgh arrgh arrgh!

I suspect the reason the Vatican has come out (no pun intended hardeehar) against this is because of the significant decline among Catholics opposing gay marriage.

Anyway, you can read about this article here, but you do have to be registered (it's free though), and you can also read about W coming out in favor of a law defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman here.

*sigh*

For this my mother wants me to attend mass?

Believe it or not, happy as I am with my little London Life, I DO miss things from the States. This is the sort of ubersuccessful book I tend to avoid because I am (o-so snottily) sure it won't be any good. Anyway, I doubt it's a work of art, say, but I am really enjoying it.

This was inspired by the fact that I'm covering an extra class this week and have basically stolen another teacher's lesson of "The Godfather." It's great because you basically just sit there and watch the movie for at least a few hours (because it's such a long movie!)

In other news, I have an actual book club to go to tonight, and I haven't read the book at all. The book DOES look good - allegedly it's one of the best Science Fiction books to come out in a long time. It's just been one of those books that I'm interested but for some reason haven't been able to get into.

I guess the real question is do I go to the book club even though I haven't read the book, or skip it and go home and read the book I'm reading?

Wooh! Look at that that! Updating my blog TWO DAYS IN A ROW! Do I get a medal? Does anyone know where I can find a flight from London to Chicago in September for less than £300? I'm not saying I have anything interesting to say, but here I am anyway! Or, as my friend Amy S says, "I'm not saying, I'm just saying." Up there with "Kinda sorta but not really" as one of my favorite ridiculous sayings.

ANYHOO, speaking of ridiculous. So, according to this article from BBC News Americas, Washington says there will be some 911-style plane hijacking events this summer. And yet, incredibly, according to this article from MSNBC, all U.S. Air Marshalls have been pulled off cross-country and long-haul flights as of Friday. Uh, DUUUUH????!?? Wasn't the reason these people were put on these flights to prevent 911-style highjacking events???!??

UNbelievable. The conspiracy theorist in me wonders, however...

Hello. I'm posting and I'm actually in a good mood. Woahhoah! I'd like to be a real live blogger type; you know, the kind who post all the time and have all sorts of cool links to interesting things, but I just don't know if I have time of inclination.

So, what a whirlwind! In the space of just over week I: went to a really lovely wedding where I got to have a kiss in the room where the Americans and the British signed the peace treaty to the Declaration of Independence (how cool is that??!?), I went to Paris and drank wine under the Tour Eiffel (OK, there were really annoying wine vendors coming up to us every 30 seconds and asking us if we wanted to buy more wine but it was still cool), I got the worst case of food-poisoning I've ever had (but strangely it only lasted a day), partied with a friend, went to ANOTHER (very strange and nowhere near as beautiful) wedding BUT it was on the sea and I saw ANOTHER lovely friend.

**PHEW!** I bet you're tired just reading this!

Crazy. Lots of stuff going on. STILL not done. Have to get a ticket to Chicago in September - I really wish the fares would go down a bit. Have to work as much as possible between now and then so I don't find myself financially destitute come October... oh, so much to do.

Anyway, hello!

Just an update to say I notice that I've noticed I never post here unless I'm feeling sad or cranky. Feeling a little bit better today. Also I want a ciggie.

Had a lovely walk to work this morning, listening to some oldies cds my dad made me. One song on there called "Nashville Cats" - not exactly sure what it means but there's a line where he says "Nobody ever buys these records up here he said but *I* will.... " just something about the way he said it; very sexy.

Got me thinking about the subtle little things that one can find sexy. Like a face with the tiniest corner of a smile. Or a stomach with a treasure trail leading down..... hands... I think bits and peices can be at times more sexy than the whole package, non?

I keep thinking of this bit in "Coal Miner's Daughter" when Loretta Lynn is waiting in her bus to go on stage, and then she goes on stage and starts singing "You Ain't Woman Enough (To Take My Man)", but she stops in the middle because she's just so stressed out and Doo has to come and take her off the stage. Before Doo comes to get her, she's saying, "it's all just moving... too faaaayast..."

I don't know if my life is moving too fast but I do feel incredibly cry-y and sad. I'm not sure why. I'm really really homesick for a start. I don't want to live in the States but I wish I could see the simplest of things; my parents' driveway from their kitchen table.

I feel kind of unsupported which is not entirely true because mister R-y R-b has been completely and utterely supportive and wonderful but I don't want to rely on him and I wish I had a girlfriend or two who I could go out with and commiserate. Really all I have to do is pick up the phone and call or start typing, I guess.

In some ways I just feel alone and adrift in my own inner turmoil. I've done so much and there's so much more to do.

*sigh*

GodDAMN I need a massage!

Happy birthday to my little bro!

Interviewing the parents of this casualty of war hasn't gone as well as the U.S. media might have hoped.

Welcome to my new blog.
